How to Identify Common US Ant Species
Correct identification is the first step in ant control. The most common household ants in the US are odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile), which emit a rotten coconut smell when crushed. They are small (1/16 to 1/8 inch), dark brown, and form large trailing colonies. Carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.) are larger (1/4 to 1/2 inch), black or red-black, and nest in wood. They do not eat wood but excavate it, leaving smooth galleries. Fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) are reddish-brown, aggressive, and build dome-shaped mounds in open areas. Pavement ants (Tetramorium caespitum) are dark brown to black, about 1/8 inch, and nest under sidewalks or slabs. Other species include Argentine ants, which are light brown and form supercolonies; pharaoh ants, tiny (1/16 inch) and yellowish, a common pest in hospitals and food facilities; and thief ants, even smaller, often found near other ant nests. Each species requires a slightly different bait formulation and treatment approach. For example, odorous house ants prefer sweets, while pavement ants favor greasy foods. Using the wrong bait can be ineffective. To identify an ant, look at size, color, number of nodes (tiny bumps on the petiole), and whether it has a distinct odor. A hand lens helps. The Ant Colony Lifecycle and Why It Matters for Control

Sanitation means removing food sources: clean up crumbs, store food in sealed containers, and take out trash regularly. Exclusion involves sealing cracks and gaps with caulk or expanding foam, installing door sweeps, and repairing window screens. Moisture control is also crucial—fix leaks, improve drainage, and reduce humidity in crawlspaces. Chemical treatments under IPM are used as a last resort, and only in targeted ways.
