Read the swarm month and you have your species
Winged ants are the cheapest identification tool available, because the three species that matter in Warren fly on different schedules. So the calendar does real work. Winged ants at a window in the third week of April, in a house with a history of gutter trouble, point hard toward carpenter ants. Winged ants outside are normal seasonal behavior from colonies in the neighborhood. Winged ants emerging inside a room, particularly from late winter into spring, confirm a colony living within the structure, because reproductives do not walk in from a frozen yard. Note the date and take a photo before you sweep them up. Both help whoever comes to look.
Carpenter ants are a wet wood problem first
Treating carpenter ants without fixing water is paying twice. These ants excavate rather than eat, and they overwhelmingly choose wood that moisture has already softened. In a city taking about 33 inches of rain a year at 71 percent average humidity, Warren supplies plenty of candidates. The usual suspects follow the water. A gutter that overflows at one corner soaks the fascia and then the rim joist behind it. A window with failed caulk wets the framing below the sill. A porch post standing on concrete wicks moisture upward for years. A basement that never dries keeps joists near the sill damp all summer. When a technician finds the nest, the useful part of the visit is the second half: what made this wood wet, and what has to change. Dust into the void kills the current colony. Where ants get into a Warren house
Entry points here are boring and predictable, which is good news, because boring problems have durable fixes. Expect questions before treatment. A technician who does not ask which rooms, what time of day and how large the ants are is guessing at the species, and the species drives everything. Outside, the walk should cover gutters and downspout discharge, grading against the foundation, siding contact points, the driveway and apron seams, porch and deck framing, and any woodpile. Inside, it should cover the basement rim joist, sink cabinets, the laundry area, window sills with past leaks, and any spot where you have seen shavings. Carpenter ant work adds tools. Tapping wood for hollow sound, a moisture meter on suspect framing, and sometimes a small hole drilled to inspect a void are normal parts of the search. Before anything is applied, ask for the plan in writing: species identified, where material goes, how many return visits are included, and what moisture repairs the company thinks the house needs. Then ask who will be on site and what license that person holds.

Bait is what reaches a queen. A perimeter spray has a role, but a plan built only on spray in a house with sawdust under the sill is not addressing the nest. How many visits does it include, and what triggers a return? Carpenter ant work in particular usually needs a confirming trip. Does it mention water anywhere? Keep the signed scope with your maintenance records so the next owner knows what was found.
