Why the two step method beats chasing mounds
Treating a fire ant mound feels productive because the mound dies. The problem is arithmetic. UGA reports 40 to 150 mounds per acre in single queen areas, and 200 or more mounds holding up to 40 million ants per acre where colonies have multiple queens. Texas A&M draws the same line at 300 mounds per acre. If your lawn has many small mounds rather than a few large ones, you are almost certainly dealing with multiple queens, and treating them individually is a summer long treadmill. The two step method works with the ants instead of against them. Broadcast bait spread across the whole lawn gets picked up by foragers from every colony, including the ones with no visible mound yet, and carried underground to the queens. Then a couple of weeks later you treat whatever mounds are still active. Timing is what makes it stick: Texas A&M recommends late August through early October, when workers are collecting hard ahead of cooler weather, and a follow up round in spring. Done twice a year, the mound count in a Tuscaloosa yard drops rather than resetting.
A Tuscaloosa ant calendar you can actually use
March is the opening bell. Clemson records Asian needle ant workers becoming active in March and staying out until late October, and fire ant activity climbs as soil temperatures enter the 70 to 95 degree range where mating and foraging peak. Spring rain triggers fire ant mating flights, which UGA notes come soon after rainy periods. April through June is prime mound building and the first good baiting window. July and August bring highs near 92 degrees, and foraging shifts into the evening and overnight hours, so daytime treatments miss the workers. This is also when Asian needle ants swarm, and when Argentine ants come indoors chasing water during dry stretches. Late August through early October is the single most valuable window of the year for broadcast bait. Tawny crazy ants, if you have them, peak in this same summer and fall stretch. November through February is quiet above ground, though Argentine ants keep pressing into heated buildings, and Tuscaloosa's mild winter lows near 34 degrees never fully shut colonies down.
Which stinging ant is it, and does that change anything?
Two ants in this area sting, and they call for different responses. Red imported fire ants live in open sun: lawns, ditch banks, ball fields, the strip beside a driveway. Their mounds are loose and domed with no opening on top, and disturbing one brings ants up your shoe in seconds. Multiple stings leave pustules a day or two later. Texas A&M puts hypersensitivity to their venom at roughly one percent of people, which is small until it is your household. Asian needle ants are the opposite. They are dark, slender and slow, they do not build mounds, and they nest under logs, stones, leaf litter and mulch in shade. Most stings happen when someone reaches into a woodpile or moves landscape stone. Clemson documents them across the Southeast with activity from March into late October. The practical difference: fire ants are a lawn program with bait, while needle ants are a harborage problem you solve by clearing damp cover and wearing gloves in Tuscaloosa yards with heavy shade.
What the first visit should look like
Expect a walk of the whole property, not just the spot where you saw ants. Outside, the technician should count and map mounds rather than eyeball a couple, since the density decides whether broadcast bait or mound treatment leads the plan. They should check bed edges, the base of the fence, wood piles, the meter box, the AC pad and any limb touching the roof. Inside, they should follow trails backward to where they cross the wall, and look at sinks, dishwashers, pet bowls and the bathroom, because Argentine ants come in for water more often than food. Ask them to name the species out loud. Fire ants, Argentine ants, tawny crazy ants and Asian needle ants all get different treatments, and a plan written for the wrong one will fail politely for months. You should end the visit with a written plan that lists the products, the areas covered, the number of visits, and when the next fire ant baiting round is scheduled.
Renters, landlords and shared yards near campus
A lot of Tuscaloosa housing is rented, and ants do not stop at a lease line. Argentine ants in particular run colonies with many nests and many queens, and UGA has measured a Georgia trail longer than 350 feet, which is more than enough to cover several units and the ground between them. Treat one apartment and the neighboring nest simply refills it. If you rent, put the problem in writing and describe what you see: where the trail runs, what time of day, whether the ants move in a straight line or erratically, and whether there are mounds in the shared yard. That detail speeds up identification. Ask whether the treatment covers the grounds as well as the interior, because fire ant mounds in a common lawn are the landlord's territory and a sting risk for everyone using it. If you own the property, schedule the lawn baiting on the calendar rather than reacting to complaints, and keep records of what was applied and when.
Comparing two quotes in a fire ant state
The first question is whether the quote treats the lawn as a system or as a list of mounds. A price per mound looks cheap in April and expensive by August, because new colonies keep appearing. A price for broadcast baiting the whole lawn twice a year is a different product, and UGA notes bait can run as little as eight dollars per acre in materials, which is why area based treatment is usually the better value. Second, check whether indoor work is separate. Fire ant lawn service does nothing for an Argentine ant trail at the kitchen sink, and some quotes quietly cover only one. Third, ask about scheduling around the late summer window, since a plan that skips late August through early October gives up the most productive baiting of the year. Fourth, ask what happens if mounds return inside the plan period. Finally, ask about the products going down where children and pets play, and how long to stay off treated turf.
