Ohio State ranks carpenter ants as the largest ant in the state and the source of more questions than any other, and the climate explains the ranking. These ants do not eat wood, they carve galleries into wood that moisture has already softened, so a region with cold winters, ice dams, and 34 inches of rain a year supplies plenty of candidate lumber. The usual locations follow water: the rim joist below a leaking gutter, a bathroom wall behind a failed seal, a porch column sitting on damp concrete, and the framing around a chimney or skylight. What separates a carpenter ant problem from a nuisance trail is what the sighting tells you. Shavings mean an active gallery, and University of Minnesota guidance says winter sightings mean the nest is inside the building. So the treatment has two halves. A technician reaches the nest inside the void, and someone fixes the water. Skipping the second half in Toledo means budgeting for the same treatment again in a year or two.

Swarmers gathering on the sunny side of the house in June usually mean the colony is in the yard or in a neighboring structure. Pharaoh ants deserve their own plan because they break the usual rules. The critical detail is what happens under pressure. Sprayed with a repellent product, a colony buds: satellite groups leave with brood and queens and set up elsewhere in the building. A problem confined to one bathroom becomes a problem on two floors. The working approach is bait, placed in every affected unit and the common areas at the same time, with monitoring over several weeks. Coordination matters more than product strength, which is why single-unit efforts fail in Toledo apartment buildings. If you manage a property, ask the provider directly whether the plan is bait-only, how many placements go out, and what the schedule for re-checks looks like. Inside, the sink cabinets, dishwasher, and pantry get checked, though on many jobs those are symptoms rather than sources. Ask for the species by name, ask what evidence supports it, and ask where the treatment goes and why. Then get the plan in writing, including follow-up visits, products, re-entry instructions, and what the company does if new trails appear in a different room next month. A written scope is also what makes two quotes comparable.
Prevention aimed at water, joints, and food
Start with roof water, because it causes the most expensive ant problem in this climate. Clean gutters, working downspout extensions, and attention to ice dam damage keep framing dry, and dry framing is uninteresting to carpenter ants no matter how many are foraging nearby. Next, close the joints. Expansion gaps where a driveway, garage slab, or porch meets the foundation are the standard pavement ant route, and sealing them removes the shortcut. Do the same for utility penetrations and any gap around a basement window frame. Third, take away the payoff. Sealed containers for dry goods and pet food, wiped counters, closed trash, and rinsed recycling mean a scout finds nothing worth recruiting to. Finally, run a seasonal check. Each spring, look at the sill plate and rim joist with a flashlight for shavings or staining, and each fall, walk the perimeter for new grit piles before the ground freezes.
